About The Artwork

INDIGENOUS WOMEN
Rómulo de Santa Rita invites us to reflect on the collective memory of our roots.

Acrylic painting, spray painting and collage on recycled paper, in a portrait of today's indigenous women, who carry with them the submission of an almost assimilated routine.

In exploring and highlighting the complexity of indigenous identities, she interweaves traditional elements with contemporary influences.

Each work is a visual testimony that celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of our culture, emphasising the importance of its traditions and resistance in the face of adversity. A series of vibrant compositions that form a rich and multifaceted tribute in a nostalgic register that takes us back to the stamps of the 60s.

Between then and now, it offers us 18 works in an immersive capture of the strength, resilience and beauty of these women. A woman, a province, an ethnicity, a culture, in a varied and vibrant palette of colours, representing origins that are persistent but clouded today. An impactful and sensitive
impactful and sensitive visual approach.

The struggle for cultural preservation in the survival of the present. The importance of women in Angola, in a context of protest and resistance, with faces that express determination and tenacity.

The overcoming of daily challenges, in silent celebrations of victories that honour their culture and continue to shape their characters.

"Indigenous Women" is a series that goes beyond mere aesthetic representation. It is a call for reflection and social commitment, which takes us on a journey to recognise the dignity of our women.

Justice and equality, in transparency and cultural acceptance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rómulo Santa Rita

As an autodidact, he moved to Luanda in 2011, where he found the inspiration that helped define his urban interventions as visual expressions of life and thought. These are then materialized through compositions based on alternative materials such as cardboard, books with stains of acrylic paint and gouache, and pieces of magazines and papers, which he carefully selects in accordance with the specific political, social, and cultural topics addressed.
