About The Artwork

FRAGILE BY RÓMULO SANTA RITA

Worn out, disrespected, and disposable... Fragile... all aboard in the same boat, they sail the volatile and negligent policies of their leaders who, similarly to what happened in the times of slavery, continue to see the people as cargo, as a currency of exchange, as an almost for free work force.

“Charity” was the name of the vessel that carried slaves from Angola to Brazil during the beginning of the 19th century. Today, that boat no longer physically docks in the ports of Angola but remains present in the path of the fragile, in a more polished way, politically more endurable. But the impact it represents in the fragility of the people almost didn’t changed –
“slaves” of the lack of education, of the lack of health, of the lack of perspectives. About “Charity”, little is known, a lot of us ask for it, but it is almost always channeled to other ends.

Rómulo Santa Rita resorts to a mixed media technique, using recyclable and disposable materials to reinforce his point of view.

A special thanks to José Silva Pinto, who captured the real fragility in each of these faces in his photography.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rómulo Santa Rita

As an autodidact, he moved to Luanda in 2011, where he found the inspiration that helped define his urban interventions as visual expressions of life and thought. These are then materialized through compositions based on alternative materials such as cardboard, books with stains of acrylic paint and gouache, and pieces of magazines and papers, which he carefully selects in accordance with the specific political, social, and cultural topics addressed.
