"I paint the social injustices, slavery that was one of the greatest injustices of human beings. When I paint, I travel in an inner world that is mine alone."

Arnulfo de Jesús Maria Cardoso's life journey is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the healing power of art. Born in Angola during a tumultuous period in the 1960s, his life took a drastic turn at the tender age of 9 when he was forcibly conscripted into an Angolan guerrilla organization during the civil war. For eight long years, he lived the life of a soldier, navigating the harsh realities of conflict.

At the age of 17, Arnulfo managed to escape to Portugal, where he embarked on a new chapter of his life. However, due to his traumatic past and involvement in the civil war, he lived in fear of potential political repercussions. Consequently, he sought refuge in Brazil, where he spent three decades of his life. During this time, he pursued education and honed his skills in Marketing and Advertising.

The end of Angola's civil war in 2008 marked a significant turning point for Arnulfo. He decided to return to Luanda, reuniting with his family after a staggering 45 years of separation. This reunion served as the catalyst for a fresh start, prompting Arnulfo to seek a new beginning in a new country—Spain.

In Spain, Arnulfo embraced a normal life and established a family. It was his wife who became his guiding light, encouraging him to explore the world of art. Through painting, Arnulfo found a means to confront his fears, exorcise inner demons, and unleash his creativity. His artwork became a canvas for depicting social injustices, particularly the historical scourge of slavery, one of humanity's most egregious offenses. Arnulfo's art is a personal odyssey, a journey through an inner world uniquely his own.

Today, Arnulfo de Jesús Maria Cardoso, known as Sisay, is a respected artist who actively participates in both national and international exhibitions. His remarkable life story, marked by resilience and artistic catharsis, serves as an inspiration to all who encounter his powerful creations.
